Seeking States

Many of us are so caught up in our yesterdays, bound to our ideas of the past, the traditional, our assumptions and prejudices, our likes and dislikes; we are no longer interested in the “seeking state”. I have found that novelty is a way of breaking this and to many experiencing mind magic, mentalism and Psychological Artistry is a novel personal experience.

Let me very briefly introduce you to an idea of Jaak Panksepp. He was a neuroscientist and psychobiologist who coined the term “affective neuroscience”, the name for the field that studies the neural mechanisms of emotion.

As part of this he talked about Seeking Systems. In summary, this is a system that drives us to seek out and engage with information that helps us. Dopamine energized seeking systems encourages exploration, investigation, curiosity, craving and expectancy.

Part of delivering mentalism is the joy of creating “seeking states” in both ourselves and others.  By tapping into Seeking System, we stimulate and motivate ourselves and others, challenge static thoughts and open new doors of perception.
